catholics account for 17.4% of the world population,while Muslims are at 19.2%
Islam has surpassed Roman catholicism as the world's largest religion,the Vatikan newspaper said Sunday:"For the first in the history,we are no longer at the fast;Muslims have overtaken us,"Monsignor vittorio formenti said in a interview with the vatican newspaper L'Osservstore Romano.Formenti complies the vatican yearbook.He said that catholics accounted for 17.4% of the world population -a stable percentage-while Muslims were at 19.2%.It is time that while Muslim families,as is well known,continue to make a lot of children,christian one of the contrary tend to have fewer and fewer,"the monsignor said.Formenti said that the data refor to 2006.The figures an Muslims were put together by Muslims countries and then provided to the united nations,he said,adding that the vatican could only vouch for its own data,when considering all christians and not just catholics make up 33% at the world population.Formenti said,spokesmen for the vatiacan and the united nations did not immediatelly return phone calls seeking comment sunday.
